We got an early start today because we had to run some errands before getting on the road. Once we were on our way we headed east on the 101 toward Port Townsend to catch the ferry. Fortunately we arrived at the ferry just as the ferry was coming in to dock so we only had to wait about 15 minutes before boarding. Because I am pulling a trailer the total length of the bike and trailer is 15' (I know because the toll collector got out his roll-a-tape and measured the distance from front tire to end of trailer) anyway, since I exceeded the 14' motorcycle limit I had to pay a car toll of $13.40 instead of the motorcycle rate of $5.90. Go figure! The ferry ride was smooth however the seas were foggy so no pictures. We met several people on the ferry many of them from Canada they all approached us because of the bikes. The ferry ride is about 35 minutes once moving but it takes several minutes to load and off load all the vehicles.

Upon disembarking the ferry we travelled east on highway 20 and stopped at Deception Pass for some awesome views. Again the photos don't do it justice. (You can tap on the photos to enlarge them)
We stopped in the town of Concrete for lunch at a mom & pop pizza place. Dave's pizza was great and my sandwich was tasty.

After lunch we enter the Northern Cascade National Forest and was amazed in the spectacular scenery and smells. The rivers that flowed had the most beautiful aqua-green color and the enumerable waterfalls that seemed to be around ever turn were refreshing and breathtaking. One of the most noteable hinges about this ride thru the Cascades and our 2012 ride is the weather. Last trip we had rain and the temp got to a low of 41 degrees. Today the sun was out and we had a high temp of 76 in the cascades. Perfect day!

We left the North Cascades and followed highway 20 into the town of Omak Washington were we called it a day 5:45. Miles ridden today: 283 for a total of 1,930.
Looks gorgeous! Glad you're bikes break the ce to meeting some interesting and friendly people! :) Love you Dad!

How long did the ferry take to cross?
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are breathtaking --the architecture of the bridge is amazing!
Did the Cascades have that glorious pine fragrance that we experienced last time?
Love you,
Myrn
Courtney, ya the bikes do open up conversation!
ReplyDeleteMyrn, the ferry takes about 35 minutes once moving but it takes time to load and off load vehicles. As for the pine smell we experienced that in Glacier Natl Park. Although the pine scent was devine today.
